Leland Stanford, founder of the university that bears his name, stressed the importance of crossbreeding academic studies with perspectives from real life. Since the start of the 20th century staff at the University have been actively encouraged to spend a part of their time outside campus, working at various companies, in order to stay in touch with real world problems. It’s a model that I think should be encouraged at other universities too, if they wish to increase their relevance and become hotbets for creativity.
